Kilt Buying Guide

The Craft of the Kiltmaker

At Highland House of Fraser we have been making kilts for over 50 years. Our kiltmakers are housed within our premises at The Scottish Kiltmaker Visitor Centre. If visiting in person, you can meet the people who make kilts, and discover for yourself the craftsmanship and expertise that goes into the making of each and every kilt – from the cutting of the cloth, to the pleating and stitching.
Employing skilled men and women, the Centre enables visitors to see the different stages of kilt manufacture and the individual care lavished on every kilt. How much cloth is needed to make a kilt? How many pleats make it hang properly? What’s the correct length? What’s the correct way to wear full Highland Dress? This is where you’ll find the answers to all these questions!

Kilt Manufacturing
Our kilts are made to strict traditional handcraft kilt manufacturing methods involving hand-pleating and fully hand sewing, using the best of materials in canvas, lining and threads. In May 2004 we took over the retail and manufacturing part of Hector Russell Ltd that was located at our premises in Inverness. Thus, the traditional kilt manufacturing methods continue as they have for over 50 years at our premises and we can boast the finest traditionally handsewn kilts, where our kiltmakers have a recognised Scottish Qualifications Authority National Award in “Traditional Handcraft Kilt Manufacturing”.
